Schwarzenegger Taxing the Truth in Attacks on Angelides
August 24, 2006
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger must be misinformed about his reelection opponent's tax proposals. Because if he weren't, he'd be flat-out fibbing. That's the gentle way of putting it.

The misinformation, it's logical to assume, is being fed to the governor by his campaign attack dogs, the biggest ones trained in the political kennels of President Bush."

What you can do about it:

It isn't even just whether we have the right to expect fair elections anymore, it's whether or not we can even HAVE elections anymore....

The latest from CA-50 ... a motion by Billbray to dismiss the case based on the fact he's already been sworn in.

...then in the course of dismissing this case the Court would be bound to conclude that the certification of the results after the swearing in of Bilbray was without force and effect, without jurisdiction, and in contravention of principles of federalism, as Defendants argue. That conclusion, however, requires either an absurdity, or the conclusion that our Congressional election was canceled by decision of the Speaker of the House, before all the votes were fully counted, and well before certification."

Oh...and of course Diebold machines were used and of course there were irregularites in the use of the machines...

Do the [Arnold appointed, Republican] Secretary of State's Voter Registration Database Restrictions Violate Federal Law?
“Whether a person is on a bureaucratic statewide voter registration list has nothing to do with whether they’re eligible to register to vote in California,” continued Bowen. “The State Constitution and state law ensure that everyone who is a U.S. citizen, will be 18 years old by the next election, is a resident of California, and isn’t in prison, on parole for a felony conviction, or mentally incompetent has a right to register to vote in this state. The Secretary of State should be focused on upholding the constitutional right that every eligible California voter is entitled to instead of worrying about whether their registration application correctly matches up with their DMV record or their Social Security Administration record.”

And in a related issue:
Nevada County supervisors will decide on Tuesday if they'll go along with County Clerk-Recorder Kathleen Smith's recommendation for a controversial voting system to be used in the November General Election. Smith will ask for the board's approval to spend $250,000 for a one-time deal with Texas-based Diebold Election Systems, Inc.
...
Until now, Nevada County voters have marked their ballots with a pencil and optical scanners tallied the results. HAVA mandates the use of a statewide voter registration database and the ability to use DRE (Direct Record Electronic) voting systems also known as touch-screens.
...
Registrars are now caught between a rock and a hard place. Federal grant money needs to be spent before this election is over, but if the systems reveal themselves to be faulty, not only would they be a colossal waste of money, the very integrity of the November election could be called into question.

SB 1760, introduced by Senator Debra Bowen, was passed by the California legislature on August 10 to "prohibit the Secretary of State from approving any voting system, including a direct recording electronic voting system, unless the paper used for its voter verified paper audit trail is of sufficient quality that it maintains its integrity and readability throughout the required retention period."
I'm hope we're still using the ink-a-vote system here in Burbank in November.

Like rats jumping off a sinking ship.....

LINCOLN, Neb. - The GOP lost its lock on the top state government offices this week when State Auditor Kate Witek jumped to the Democratic party just a few months after campaigning as Republican Tom Osborne's running mate in a failed gubernatorial bid.

"I got to the point where it seemed the Republican Party was only looking at controlling all the offices instead of looking at resolving all the problems challenging this state," Witek said in Friday's Lincoln Journal Star.
Via MyDD

Over the past several months, a number of leading Republicans around the country have defected to the Democratic Party in their election bids. Their ranks include two former Republicans now running statewide bids in Kansas this fall, Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison who is challenging wingnut state Attorney General Phill Kline and former Kansas Republican Party Chairman Mark Parkinson who is running as Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' running mate.

Given the subjects discussed at last night's meeting, I thought this would be of interest:

From MyDD:
http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/8/16/103146/883

"House Republicans have received fairly positive press coverage over the past 24 hours following their announcement of $40 million worth of television ad buys for their candidates around the country. Of course the GOP figure is somewhat modest when compared to the more than $50 million reserved by House Democrats this year (the first time in recent memory that the National Republican Congressional Committee will be outspent by its Democratic counterpart), but nevertheless it represents a significant investment in maintaining the GOP majority in the House.

Taking a look at the specifics of the ad buy, though, it becomes clear that the Republican action is almost wholly defensive and reactive. Whereas the Dems' ad buy targets 27 seats (and perhaps eventually more) while defending just five, the vast bulk of the GOP ad buy is dedicated to protecting vulnerable incumbents."

It’s Our Party and We’ll Cry Out If We Want To!
(Occasional discursions on the desserts and derisions of Democrats and democracy.)

Why have we formed the Burbank Democratic Club? What do we stand for?

We stand for Honor, Equality, Affinity, Representation, and Truth.

We also stand for Security, Opportunity, Universality, and Liberty.

We are the HEART and SOUL of America.

We are Democrats who simply believe in real democracy.

Honor is the only way to conduct business, ours, yours, the town’s, state’s, and nation’s.

Equality means no one, not even someone in power, has more rights than anyone else.

Affinity means, no matter our differences, we need to work together for community.

Representation is for all, from all, so all politics must start from the local to the top.

Truth is always going to come out, so we all may as well start with it to create real trust.

And

Security means social security and personal security to live calmer, better lives.

Opportunity for all gives people an even chance in life, for life.

Universality of health care and education will enable all to take that even chance.

Liberty is what this country means and every American has the right to deserve it.

The President has his "signing statements" - this is the common citizen's signing statement. Sign on to these values by joining the Burbank Democratic Club and let's bring common sense back to government.
